Summary

The two main concentrations of my work history have been in hardware design and network design/integration. Both have dealt extensively with LTE and CDMA wireless telecommunications services and Optical Networking platforms for the major service providers across the country. My primary role was to architect, design, integrate and test the hardware and networks. I also took part in the deployment, troubleshooting and customer interaction associated with the networks.

Work experience

1996-present, Alcatel-Lucent Technologies  Murray Hill, NJ

Circuit Design and Architecture

Developed hardware architectures and detailed circuit designs for printed circuit boards(PCBs) used in TDMA/CDMA Cellular 3G/4G Base Stations and Optical Switching platforms.

Some of the features of the work included:

·   Digital circuit designs: Microprocessors(FreeScale, Intel, TI), memory, FPGAs, SPI, PCIe, Serdes and I2C bus, Ethernet, DDR3, etc.

·   Analog circuit designs: A/D and D/As, op amps, FETS, transistors, dc/dc converters, power supplies, etc.

·   Design considerations for EMI, ESD and power usage.

·   Schematic creation/capture with Mentor, Orcad

·   PCB Layout/Routing, Multilayer boards with fine pitch BGAs.

·   Xilinx, Lattice, Altera FPGA, CPLD designs with VHDL and vendor proprietary tools

·   SPICE modeling

·   C/C++, Unix , TCL coding

·   Test and Troubleshooting with oscilloscope, logic analyzers and other instruments

·   Interface with mechanical, software and systems engineers and parts procurement

·   Documentation: Design documents, Test plans, Requirements

Circuit cards developed:

Optical Protection Line Switch Card for the 1830 Photonic DWDM Service Switch

This card detects optical channel line failures and switches to a redundant fiber based on a DSP algorithm. Photodiodes were used to convert a portion of the signal to electrical for A/D and DSP analysis.

Optics Platform Main Controller Card

This was a multipurpose PCB acting as a controller for a Metro Optics platform.

There were numerous functions on the card that supported the control of the system.

Optical Time Domain Reflectometer Card for the 1830 Photonic DWDM Service Switch

This card supported the analysis of fiber optic cable spans. Anomalies along the cable span could be characterized for analysis.

Network Processor Based Processing Card for a Radio Network Controller(RNC):

This PCB provided packet based routing for a Radio Network Controller

Some aspects of the design included:

·   Utilized Intel IXP2400 network processor and IBM 405GPr host processor

·   Utilized Xilinx Virtex Pro FPGA, DDRAM, Fifo, Flash and other memory types

Services Card for a Communications Gateway:

This PCB forwarded IP packets routed from external networks at OC48 rates. Numerous applications could be applied to the board including stack processing, IPSEC, Modem RAS.

AAL1 Circuit Emulation Trunk Card for Communication Gateway:

This was a trunking PCB for ATM AAL1 encapsulated voice calls. The board accepted TDM voice calls encapsulated in ATM AAL1 over OC3 SONET.

Wide Band Radio Signal Processing Card:

Architecture and detailed circuit design of a signal processing PCB for in building Wireless communications. A Motorola MPC8260 and MPC740 processor combination was use to communicated with 8 Texas Instruments DSPs, which performed the voice CODECs. A/D and D/A converters interfaced to the radio module.

TDMA Radio Controller Card for TDMA Base Station:

This was a Master Controller PCB for a TDMA Base Station. The base station consisted of the Master Controller, the Radio Interface board and an amplifier controller. A dual Motorola MPC860 design was used to terminate T1/E1 lines from the Mobile Switching Center. Voice calls were carried to the PSTN via the MSC.  A backplane TDM bus carried calls from the Master Controller to the Radio Interface board.

Network Engineering Architecture, Design and Integration

Designed, integrated and tested enterprise networks carrying 3G, EVDO and LTE Voice and Data traffic for the major cellular carriers. Traffic was backhauled over fiber between CDMA base stations and the mobile switching centers(MSC) and between LTE EnodeBs and the IMS.

Some of the features of the work included:

·   Integrated voice and data network components with routers and switches

·   Used routing protocols in the designs including OSPF, BGP, MPLS protocols

·   Used other protocols including DHCP, STP, ACLs and IPSEC, Firewall, IPv4, IPv6, TCP, FTP, SIP, Diameter, GTP, Virtual Routers, BFD, VRRP

·   Used physical layer technologies including SONET, T1, Ethernet GigE, 10GigE

·   Designed for redundancy and high availability

·   Extensive design and test of Class of Service across the network

·   Multivendor solutions including Cisco, Juniper and Alcatel-Lucent networking equipment

·   Networking nodes included Cisco 10K, CRS routers and 6509 MLS; Juniper M40s and 8208: Alcatel-Lucent 7750s; various L2 switches: DMX DWDM/EoS equipment; Fortinet network security, 1830 DWDM Switches,

·   Developed security features including IPSEC, Firewalls and access lists

·   CDMA network elements included base station, FMM-AP and 5E switches

·   Wifi network integration

·   LTE and CDMA network elements both EPC core and IMS.

·   Implemented software upgrade procedures for all elements.

·   Created router scripts, documentation and provided customer support

·   Extensive experience with IOS, Junos, TCL,Procomm, C/C++

The networks listed above were lab simulated before being deployed. Configurations were created for all nodes. Design documents were written in support of deployments. Extensive customer interaction occurred throughout the design and deployment process. Customer presentations were given numerous times.  Worked with a collaborative team for the end to end solution.

1995-1996   Control Resources Corporation         Fairlawn, NJ     PCB Circuit Design

Designed and developed a PCB for a Network Interface Unit. The NIU provided an interface between the Central Office via T1 lines and local in building networks. Motorola communication processors were used as the main controller. T1 termination, data switching, RS-232,485 interfaces were implemented.

1985–1995   ITT Defense Communications          Nutley, NJ        PCB Design

Peace Shield Defense System:

Designed and developed PCBs for secure communications terminals. This included voice, data and fax. Data was digitally encoded and transmitted over POTs lines via QPSK modem with echo cancellation. The designs consisted of multiple subsystems controlled by Texas Instruments TMS320C25 DSP’s.

Airterm Mobile Radio System:

Designed and developed PCBs for miniaturized mobile radio systems. Voice data from portable telephones was transmitted over satellite or radio connections.

GPS Satellite Payload Nuclear Event Detector:

Designed and developed a PCB for a satellite payload. This card interfaced to a RF PCB and performed signal processing on the received signal. The satellite was part of the GPS system and detected nuclear events throughout the world.
